MCF Rare Wine

The Rockstar of the Sud Ouest

France's Southwest is probably the last of its classic regions to remain largely under-appreciated.

That's not to say it's un-appreciated, but I think it's safe to say that it's not on the top of most people's list of wine regions.

Slowly but surely, over the years, though, I like to think that we at MCF have introduced as many wine drinkers as anyone to the brilliance of this region, and have done so largely on the back of the Rockstar of the region, Elian da Ros.

For those of you who know these wines, you've likely already clicked through to the checkout page.

For those of you who don't, here's the short version.

Following a five year stint at the famed Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace, Elian da Ros returned to his home in the Côtes du Marmandais, a region known mostly for growing vegetables, and set up a small. simple winery, with the goal of becoming the first grower to bottle their own wines in the AOP.

I've been hawking his brilliance for a decade now, and so many of you have become regulars for whatever we get.

Today, I'm happy to have two of my (and your) favorites, along with a new one that we're really excited about.

I'll start with the newbie, the Histoires de Boire - a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Abouriou, made in an lightly extracted, semi-soif-y style and bottled in magnum.  It's herbaceous and earthy, but it's also wonderfully lively and balanced.  If Beaujolais had a spunky cousin from down Southwest...

His flagship wine, the Vin est Une Fête is the perfect snapshot of his style.  A blend of the local Abouriou 40%, Cab Franc 40% and 20% Merlot, it combines the deep, dark, brawny, mineral character of the region, with an elegance and balance that makes it effortlessly drinkable.  The price has crept up over the years, yes, but it still represents one of the great values in France.

Then we have the Vignoble d'Elian, which is, pound for pound, my favorite wine he makes.  This is a blend of 50% Cab Franc, 30% Merlot and 20% Syrah and is just unbelievably delicious, especially for the price.  It's dark, intensely mineral, wild, spicy and has a chiseled focus to it that holds it all upright.

Think Bordeaux meets Southern Rhône...or Bordeaux with a wild streak...

or, just think Sud Ouest...

...because it deserves to be thought of as its own thing...
