The Other Sancerre

Sancerre Blanc is, at this point, arguably the most famous single appellation in all of France, with millions of cases per year being consumed in the US alone.

Today, though, I'm not here to drone on about how a huge percentage of it is basically garbage, or any of the other Sancerre sub-topics I've been know to rant about...

No, today I want to talk about a producer whose Sancerre is most certainly not the garbage kind, but also about one specific wine in their lineup...

...the other Sancerre...

...the red one...

Yes, many people know about red Sancerre, and some of those people actually seek it out...

However, even the demand for Sancerre Rosé dwarfs that of Rouge, but hopefully a wine like today's example can shed some more light on this often-scoffed-at appellation of Pinot Noir.

If you like truly classic and proper Sancerre, Gérard Boulay is a name you're familiar with.  His single-site bottlings of the white stuff have been highly desirable for decades.

But, if you told me that you're intimately familiar with his Sancerre Rouge Oriane, then I'd at least react with a pleasantly surprised smirk...

...because this is a way legit glass of lofty, airy, perfumed, balanced and insanely precise Pinot Noir.  And, let's be truthful, such elegance isn't the norm for this appellation, which is often thought of as yielding tightly-knit and somewhat surly/overly firm wines.

Named after his daughter, it's produced in tiny quantities from 40 year old vines of Pinot Noir that Gérard planted on a steep hillside of Kimmeridgian terre blanche in Chavignol.

It's pretty, it's delicate, it's aromatic, it's finely delineated, it's just...

...irresistible...

...and I think you should try it, and then understand why proper Sancerre rouge should not only be on your radar, but is worth seeking out.

And, yes, yes, of course I'm offering some of his glorious, chiseled, precise and ageworthy Sancerre blancs, as well...

...because duhh...
