Pinot Noir Roundup Part 2:
France and Germany

Today is Part 2 of our weekend Pinot Noir roundup. Yesterday in Part 1, we explored some New World Pinots from Oregon and California. Today we visit the Old World, with Pinot from Burgundy, the Languedoc-Roussillon, Germany and the obscure Coteaux de Champlitte appellation in France, located between Burgundy and Alsace.

Germany
Hofgut Falkenstein Rotwein Trocken Niedermenniger Herrenberg 2017 $29/btl (limited, 6 bottles available)
A perfectly delicate, fragrant red of Pinot Noir from a Mosel Riesling producer that showcases Falkenstein's beautiful freshness and acidity. Great German Pinot is truly its own light, lively, elusive and depth-filled "thing" and this bottle is a wonderful example.

France
Languedoc-Roussillon
Les Fontanelles Pinot Noir 2017 $13/btl
A true rarity in that it is a Pinot Noir under $15 that is actually really good! The grapes are coming from the Languedoc and they produce a fresh, aromatic and well-balanced Pinot Noir at an unbeatable price.

Coteaux de Champlitte
Pascal Henriot Coteaux de Champlitte Pinot Noir 2018 $25/btl
Delicate, floral, energetic and wonderfully balanced, this is a super aromatic, transparent and lively Pinot that truly over-delivers for the price. True to its geography, the palate falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum between the sturdy fruit of Burgundy and the more savory character of Alsace and the Jura.

Burgundy
Louis Jadot Chorey les Beaunes Les Beaumonts 2012 (Gagey) $35/btl (limited, 6 bottles available)
A spicy, red-fruited Cote de Beaune from Louis Jadot. This bottle definitely falls on the lighter-bodied side for a Burgundy, with a pronounced acidic structure that nicely balances that red fruit.

Louis Jadot Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges 2014 $89/btl (NET price)
An elegant yet powerful and complex 1er Cru from the lovely, fragrant and ethereal 2014 vintage. Floral, red fruits and pronounced minerality with excellent concentration and a super long finish. This is a fantastic example of what a 1er Cru red Burgundy is all about.
