Philippe Rossignol - Gevrey Purity

The 2019s in Burgundy are making a lot of waves.

They've got great concentration, they've got great focus, they've got great structure and (especially in the case of today's producer) they've got wonderfully pure fruit.

2019's biggest problem, though, is that there isn't much of any to go around.

But, since we've been on a Burgundy kick the last couple of weeks, it seemed like a perfect chance to highlight the wines of a producer whose 2019s are absolutely gorgeous - Philippe Rossignol.

Rossignol's wines are always very good in my book, though in cooler or more restrained vintages, they tend to be very tightly-wound and, perhaps to some, a bit on the severe side.

In warmer years, though, he often knocks it out of the park in terms of both early appeal and long-term structure.

In 2019, he knocked it out of the park...

These four friendly, pure, elegant and deceptively structured Gevreys are flat-out fabulous.

The AC Gevrey-Chambertin, which is wonderfully red-fruited, fragrant and substantial, shows great mineral intensity and subtle spice on the finish.  So delicious, right out of the gate...

It's followed by the Gevrey Evocelles, which takes that fantastic purity and mineral red fruits, and dials up the aromatic intensity and elegance.  As someone who loves high-toned elegance, this was, in many ways, my pound-for-pound favorite.

The Gevrey 1er Cru Les Corbeaux is the darkest and most compact of the lineup, with more muscular tannins and weightier texture.  Though it's really nice right out of the gate, there's a whole bunch of complexity stuffed into it that will slowly release over the coming years.

Finally, the just lovely Gevrey 1er Cru Estournelles Saint Jacques takes the brilliant aromatics and elegance of the Evocelles and combines it with the firmer structure and mineral depth of the Les Corbeaux, making it easily the most complete and complex wine of the lineup, and one that's going to really blossom over the next ten-plus years.

Buying Burgundies is always a bit of a leap of faith for people, but I really think you should take that leap...

...these wines are fantastic...and you can get a bit of quantity on them!
