Notarpanaro - Cosimo Taurino's Mega-Value

It's rich.

It's earthy.

It's full bodied.

It's loaded with rustic, soulful depth and complexity.

It's warming and comforting, perfect for this time of year.

It's nine years old, in the prime of its drinking window, but there's plenty of life ahead of it.

...

It's $20/btl.

Yeah...

...$20...

Cosimo Taurino's Notarpanaro 2011 (100% Negroamaro from Salento) is about as good an example of what I'm always ranting about - namely that, despite the huge strides it's made in the last 20 years in terms recognition, Southern Italy is still the last great treasure trove of underappreciated wines on the market...

And I'm not just talking about the 'value' category that launched wines from Sicily and Apulia (etc.) onto the radars of American wine drinkers back in the late '90s, I'm talking about wines that will age for 20+ years into gorgeous, complex, compelling wines that are packed with vitality and character that's totally unique in the wine world.   (See all the times I've hawked an Aglianico in this newsletter...)

In the case of this Notarpanaro, though, 'gorgeous, complex, compelling wines that are packed with vitality and character' and 'value' intersect.

On top of that, you don't have to take my usual word that 'this is an inexpensive wine that will age beautifully, if you let it', because...it's already done that.

At age nine, it's a mature, wide open, rich, earthy, mineral, smoky, beautifully rustic wine that'll satisfy every jones on your list during these cold, short days while rich, meaty, comforting dishes slowly fill your home with wonderful aromas from your stove or oven.

It's a wine we've been happily selling off the shelf for the last few months but, after yet another restocking of it due to so many 'hey, that Notarpanaro was amazing, can I get a case?!' orders, I realized that I probably oughtta share it with everyone.

So, this is me sharing it with everyone...as in you...

It's here, just waiting for its chance to prove to you that, yes, I've been right all along...

...about Southern Italy...

(Just allow me to sit with that for a moment, as I don't get the chance to feel 'right' all that much...)

In all seriousness, thought...this wine is right.
