My  Favorite Pound-for-Pound Burg is Back

My favorite pound-for-pound Burgundy...

What on earth could that possibly even mean?

In a region with hundreds of producers and thousands of individual bottlings, how can one specific wine be someone's favorite?

I'll admit that it does seem a bit of a silly thing to say.

But then I reflect on all of the great experiences I've had with this wine since the first vintage I offered of it, the 2012, some seven years ago.  Every bottle I've tasted or drank in every vintage, whether just released, or with 5-6 years of age on it, has been pretty much a perfect experience.

Not 'perfect' as in the ridiculous notion that there is such a thing as a perfect wine, but perfect in that it was all I could have asked for in that given moment...as in 'perfectly roasted chicken and a perfectly symbiotic glass or red Burgundy' perfect.

So, yes, while there certainly are many red Burgs that are objectively better than George Lignier's Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes out there, there are few, if any, that so consistently deliver that 'everything I wanted from my wine in this exact moment' experience, and do so at such a relative value in terms of price.

The other totally awesome thing about it is that George is always a couple of years behind on his releases, a luxury few in Burgundy still have.  So, while everything arriving now is mostly 2020, today's offering for the Ormes is from the utterly classic, Burgundy-purist's 2017 vintage.

It's darkly-pitched, focused and structured, but is also so wonderfully aromatic and spiced.  It's drinking so nicely right now, but is only going to continue to blossom over the next 5-10 years.

So, yeah...it's my pound-for-pound favorite...

...there, I said it...
