Julien Brocard - That Readily Available Raveneau Thing

Our first stint with the brilliant wines of Julien Brocard came a few years back, when we first tasted his Petit Chablis les Plantes, and I'll just say that it was pretty revelatory.

Here, you had a wine that retailed for under $35, but the depth and wisdom of a Chablis that should have cost a lot more...a lot more.

It has hints of that kind of thing you get from that one super-famous producer, when his wines have had time to age.

You know...that one...

...with the 'R'...

...okay fine, I'll say what I said the other week when tasting through the 2021 lineup...

...they have this readily available Raveneau thing to them.

No, I'm not saying that this is Raveneau for a fraction of the price...

...but I am saying that Brocard's wines have a similar touch of that nutty/savory oxidative breadth to them, the kind of extra depth that makes fans of old-school Chablis swoon.

And, yes, they are dramatically less pricey...

...and way easier to get your hands on...

...for now...

...so, crap, I guess I'm kinda saying they're like Raveneau for a lot less money?

In any case, you have to try them.  We have fallen head over heels for them here, and I'm quite sure you will too.

The nakedly delicious Petit Chablis 2021, with its firm minerality anchoring the lightly honeyed, nutty/cheesy nuance, is, yet again, a mind-blowing value, even if the price has ticked above $35.

The lieu dit Chablis Boissonneuse 2021 takes that honeyed/savory/nutty profile and both deepens and broadens it, while dialing up the texture, and shows even more thrilling nuance and stoniness lurking throughout.

Then there's the 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2021 which, true to its legend, is tightly wound, nimble and strikingly mineral, with a lot of those developed flavors still locked up inside its streamlined profile.  It's a wine your palate almost has to run to keep up with, and I can't wait to see how this one develops in the coming years.

So, whether you care about my name-dropping comparison, or not - and you shouldn't, you should care about the other things I said ;) - you really should give these wine a go.

You don't get this kind of authentically unique character and complexity at these prices all that much anymore, and, in the case of these wines, I'm not sure how much longer it'll last, either.
