Four Cool Rosés

Because Rosé is great this (or any) time of year...

...and because 'Rosé' doesn't always have to mean 'super light shade of pink'...

...here are four wildly, awesomely delicious options for this (or any) time of year.

FRECCIAROSSA Pinot Nero Rosato Margherita 2019

Farming organically in the Oltrepo Pavese zone of Lombardia in Northern Italy, Frecciarossa focuses on the typical grapes of the zone - Barbera, Bonarda, Uva Rara and, in this case, Pinot Nero.  This barely pink Rosato of Pinot Noir is like a laser beam of refreshing pink fruits, racy, high-toned acidity and subtle mineral/herbaceous notes.  Lovely.

BONAVITA Rosato 2020

Bonavita, located in tiny appellation of Faro on Sicily's Northeastern tip, makes what is, for me, the benchmark version of Faro Rosso.  This beautifully lively and juicy Rosato is made from the same grapes as the Rosso - Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Capuccio and Nocera - and shows deep berry fruits interlaced with perky spice and, of course, nice, stony, rustic, molto Siciliane elements underneath.

ANDREA OCCHIPINTI Alea Rosa 2020

Not to be confused with the famous Milanese film producer (or his Sicilian winemaking namesake), Andrea Occhipinti's small, organic estate overlooking Lago di Bolsena in Lazio, just inside the border with neighboring Umbria, is a true gem.  He works exclusively with two indigenous, rather obscure varietals, Grechetto Nero and Aleatico.  His style definitely leans 'natural', and this insanely drinkable Rosato is borderline Orange Wine in style.  It's 100% Aleatico that's fermented in tank and aged in concrete.  It's light, refreshing, juicy, quirky and just flat out delicious.

CHÂTEAU FONTVERT Luberon Rosé Les Restanques 2020

Fontvert's pure, mineral, refreshing Restanques Rosé has really become our benchmark for classic, organic Provençal rosé in the sub-$20 slot.  The appellation of Luberon technically straddles the line between Provence and the Southern Rhone, but this little beauty is Provence through and through.  It has all of the delicate pink fruits, lively acidity and the signature rocky herbaceousness that you expect from Southern France, in as genuine and soulful a style as you could hope to get, especially for just $16.
