Flavors of Fall

The flavors of Fall. Savory and spicy. Hearty but balanced. Orchard fruits, cranberries, persimmons and pomegranates. Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. And gather it all with a basket of flowers...pardon me, I digress. When I think of what I want to drink in Fall, I think of wines that both evoke and complement these flavors and qualities; you will find below a selection of bottles that I believe do just that.

Crowley Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2017 $26

A harmonious, stony, savory Pinot Noir from Oregon with dark, spicy red and black fruits along with just a hint of smokiness. Crowley is a small production, hands-on producer focused on producing terroir-driven wines that are all about freshness and balance. This is a versatile but distinct Pinot that will happily ride hand in hand with any number of fall dishes but duck, mushrooms and salmon are all whispering "Crowley" to me at the moment.

Domaine de Ferrand Cotes du Rhone Syrah La Ferrande 2016 $26

A Cotes du Rhone that perfectly captures the essence of 'the Rhone' as a whole. The fragrant savoriness of the North mixed with the meaty, dark nature of a classic Southern Rhone red. The Ferrand is a bit chewier than the Crowley while also remaining a great companion wine to any number of dishes. When I think of the Crowley, I want to be sitting at the dinner table with a roast duck leg while I participate in a bite, sip, repeat sequence. The Ferrand has me contemplating a meat and cheese board over the course of a leisurely weekend afternoon.

Contra Soarda Breganze Vespaiolo 2018 $21

With Fall being a transitional season, it calls for versatile wines that are substantial but not quite powerful, fresh but structured. This Vespaiolo from Contra Soarda perfectly matches this criteria. Vespaiolo is a somewhat obscure varietal from the Veneto region in Italy and Mirco Gottardi of Contra Soarda does a wonderful job working with it. Aromatic and floral, with some apparent minerality, orchard fruits and herbal notes; the palate is medium-bodied and shows an excellent balance between the acidity and the structure, with a somewhat creamy texture and and a nice, clean finish. This Vespaiolo is an 'all-day' wine that will pair beautifully with your Eggs Benedict at brunch along with your vegetable risotto or any buttery, cheesy pasta dish you want to throw at it at dinner time.
