Curtaz's Etna Brilliance
There are not a lot of whites on Etna that have the chic finesse of Federico Curtaz's Etna Bianco Gamma.
I really wanted to cut to the chase on this one, because...well...
...there are not a lot of whites on Etna that have the chic finesse of Federico Curtaz's Etna Bianco Gamma.
I've highlighted numerous vintages of Santa Maria La Nave's Millesulmare Bianco in this newsletter, and those of you who know that wine should listen up about this one, because we're operating in a very similar space here.
A Val d'Aotstan by birth, Federico Curtaz grew up in Piedmont and graduated with an agronomist degree. In 1983, he began a 15 year stint working with Angelo Gaja and later had a career as a consulting winemaker, working all over the world.
He finally landed in Sicily in the '90s and settled on Etna where the local wines were just beginning to experience a renaissance. After working with another winery there, he struck out on his own in 2015.
Back to his wine, though. I've had a lot of Etna Bianco, and I revel in its beautifully Sicilian rusticity, but this lovely, precise and elegant expression of Etna Carricante has a beautifully French sensibility to it. Fabulously chic in texture, aromatically dazzling and mineral to the core. It's proper Etna Bianco through and through, but it has this unmistakably precise, sleek and focused stance to it that makes it very unique among its peers.
And I mean that in the best possible way.
The best...
...seriously...
