Cornell Vineyards: The Next Great Cali Cab

Yes, I know, top-tier California Cabernet isn't exactly what you expect to see when you open one of my emails, but this is your chance to get in on the ground floor of what I think is going to be the next great one.

High atop Spring Mountain sits one of the most truly breathtaking, panoramic vineyards you'll come across in all of California wine country.

Nearly 20 years ago, Henry and Vanessa Cornell purchased this plot of land on a former stagecoach route where the early settlers cultivated vines.

After nearly two decades of meticulous farming and care, this lovely 2014 Cabernet, just their second vintage bottled, is showcasing their vision beautifully.

This is as fully-endowed a Cabernet as you'll encounter, and I don't mean the 'all-power-no-nuance' kind of endowment, but rather the 'this-really-has-everything-you-look-for-in-a Cabernet-based-wine' kind of endowment...and that's why I'm so excited about it.

It's truly a throwback style that, yes, shows all of the broad, deep, dark, powerful Spring Mountain fruit you expect, but all of it is wrapped around a massive frame of classic structure and intense minerality that any top-tier Left Bank Bordeaux would be jealous of.

As I mentioned, the fruit is certainly on the darker side of the spectrum, interwoven with lovely choco/menthol notes and subtle herbal/savory nuance, but the wine is also remarkably energetic for such a profile.

Teases of the deep complexity that's locked inside the very tightly-knit tannins emerge from sip to sip, leaving you in anticipation of what's to come.

Enjoyable now?  Sure, very much so.

But this one is really built for aging in the way I've always wished some other Napa/Sonoma Cabs would be.

Through my long term friendship with Henry and Vanessa (they're also prolific collectors of wine as well), I'm really excited to be one of the few retailers who has access to the extremely limited amount of this wine that's available.

For those of you who are longtime Cali Cab collectors, this has your name all over it.

For those of you who haven't visited this category in a long time, this is the one that might draw you back.

Either way, the chance to get in on a wine like this in the early days doesn't come around that often, so...get in on it!

This wine arrives this coming Monday, 1/22.
