I have a major soft spot for Old-School Cali red wines...
...which is good for me, because, these days, we have an embarrassment of riches, if you will, in terms of new producers who are making the kinds of no-makeup wines of blissful purity and varietal character that made it such a special place all those decades ago.
Railsback Frères, by brothers Lyle & Eric Railsback, are one such producer. Their wines are genuine, low-key and just plain delicious...and really seem to transport you to that earlier era.
When I tasted today's wine, their 2017 California Red Wine (a delicious blend of Syrah and Grenache) I had that wonderful, pure, pretension-free enjoyment again...
...but with the added benefit of the fact that this wine already had some nice bottle age on it...
...so, and I'm serious here, it felt like drinking and OLD old-school Cali wine.
I mean it when I say that if you blinded me on it, I would have said it was a bottle from one of those classic Cali producers, probably from the 90s.
With its ethereal dark fruits, subtly serious depth, herbaceous/savory undertones and racy acidity, it honestly felt like one of those 20+ year old bottles you hit the jackpot on when value hunting at auction...
(and trust me, value-hunting old Cali wine at auction is one of my favorite pastimes)
The icing on the cake being that I can sell it to you at old-timey pricing too...
After selling many a bottle of this level of enjoyment at the $50-100 level, I'm happy to offer this little gem for $28/btl.
Because I love you all that much.
If you're looking for rich/powerful/luxurious, this might not be for you...
...but, if you're like me, and you love being transported back to another era...
...an era of nuance and detail and refinement...
...this has your name all over it.
So, hurry before I drink it all myself...
