Cascina Baricchi Timorasso: A Most Unique Italian White
One of the most unique white wines produced in Piedmont (and, frankly, all of Italy) is back!
Cascina Baricchi's Ça Va Sans Dire Bianco 2016 is probably the most unique expression of the Timorasso grape out there at the moment.
This, our third vintage of the wine after the 2012 & 2014 vintages, is definitely the most intense version yet...
...which, I guess, is what six months on the lees and NINE years in old, neutral barrels will do to a white.
You're probably tempted to think that a white wine that spent nine years in barrel will be very advanced in terms of flavor, and, in some ways, it is...
...but mostly this drinks like a very young nine year old wine, and in a vintage as substantial as 2016 was in the region, this is a very serious iteration that has a long life ahead of it, yet.
It has that glorious acidic structure and underlying salty/mineral core that holds it all upright, but the fruit elements here are a bit more on the tropical side, and have a very appealing texture to them. Where a vintage like 2012 had already begun to show the fabulous nutty/savory/honeyed development, in this substantial 2016, those secondary elements are mere whispers of a glorious future...
...some time, say in another 2 or 3 years, when all of those fantastic nuances will be running full bore.
Don't get me wrong, though...it's a beautiful, absolutely singular wine right now, especially in these warmer months, where refreshing brightness, and noble structure are all you're looking for...
...at something like a lobster bake...
