And Beautiful Bandol Rosé (And a Beautiful Tribute to One...)

It's been a refreshingly long, cool Spring (which I've loved) but...

...Memorial Day weekend is just a skip away, and, thusly, here's my first rosê email of the year.

After a couple of Summers where rosé seemed to have been crushed by the new weight that orange wine carried in the market, it seems to be staging a comeback...

...which is a really good thing, especially when considering these two wines.

Domaine des Trois Filles in Bandol is, admittedly, and estate I was unfamiliar with, but I'm really glad that I am now familiar with it.  This 2023 is a gorgeous example of Bandol rosé, and one that stands apart from many of its siblings in this most famous of appellations.  Where most Bandol rosé are defined by their structure and power, this is as elegant and refined a Bandol rosé as I think I've tasted in a long while, maybe ever.

Rather than having that signature Bandol power manifest itself in the flavor profile, here it shows up in the texture of the wine, which is gloriously oily and compact, giving the wine this sense of restraint that's irresistible.  Typically, I advocate for you to lay your Bandol pinkies down for at least one year to allow them to mellow out, but, with this lovely blend of of 60% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache and 15% Cinsault, you won't have to do that, as it's already got a vintage under its belt!

So, in this case, I wouldn't blame you for drinking it all before the 4th of July...

Then, to counter a classic Bandol, we have a CA rosé that's a tribute to Bandol.  Bedrock's Ode to Lulu Rosé is a wine that probably needs very little intro to most of you, but I really have to say that this 2024 vintage of it is just spectacular...like really.

As the name says, this is Morgan and Chris's homage to Lulu Peyraud of the famous Domaine Tempier and, as such, is comprised mostly of very old vine Mourvèdre (76%), or Mataro as they call it, with 16%/8% of Syrah and Grenache respectively. This is honestly one of the best California pinkies I can recall tasting - it's got a ton of flavor, yes, but it's all about subtlety and balance.

It's lithe, it's racy, it's a little salty, a little fruity, a little stony...

...it's just delicious.

And it also comes in a 3L bag-in-box, too.  And if you think boxes are bad, you need to stop thinking that, because the ability to drink a glass at a time of fabulous, top-tier rosé, over the course of a month or more, is, let's be honest, exactly what everyone wants...

...and if you're worried about being judged for it...just buy a bottle and a box...

...drink the bottle and then keep filling it back up from the box.

Seriously.
