Aged Schioppettino
This is a fun one.
Schioppettino is one of the world's truly unique grapes, mixing a dark, herbaceous minerality that's reminiscent of Cabernet Franc, with a fierce, linear structure of similar to Nebbiolo. I suppose you could, in some ways, compare it to Southern France's Tannat, but why compare one rather obscure grape to another one.
Like all of these grapes I mentioned above, though, one thing Schioppettino does well, is age...
...like, really well..
...and, actually it really kinda requires age, if you ask me.
But, as this Le Vigne di Zamò Schioppettino 2016 certainly shows, once it has that age, it's one of the coolest full-flavored wines you'll encounter...
While it may not have the vaunted reputation in the US of a winery like their appellation mates, Ronchi di Cialla, Le Vigne di Zamò is also really, really good at Schioppettino.
And like Cialla, Zamò also holds back a library of this really good Schioppettino until it's really ready to drink...
...and, boy, is this 2016 Schioppettino really ready to drink.
Think of a really structured, angular expression of a Cab Franc, but with a intensely stony core and an electric, herbaceous edginess to it...
...but that has had plenty of time to rest, so that edginess has softened a bit, and deep, earthy, dark fruit has had a chance to meld with all that intense, energetic character.
It's powerful and muscular, yet it has also reached a state of harmony that makes it such a joy to drink.
Which means you should enjoy drinking it...
