MCF Rare Wine

A Special, Delicious Barolo
Back in September, I sent out an offer for the fabulous Barolo Classico 2019 of Abbona, and, as usual, it was a huge hit.

Besides meeting with Chiara Abbona here at MCF, I also attended a wonderful dinner in her honor at Roscioli, and one of the focal points of that dinner was a preview of a special, new-to-the-US Barolo that would be arriving in the coming months - the 2016 Barolo Cerviano Merli.

Well, that fabulous Barolo has arrived, and I'm very proud to be offering it today, as the first official MCF offer of 2024.

I genuinely believe it to be worthy of such an honor (to the extent that such a thing is an honor?)...

As I mentioned, the Cerviano-Merli is a wine that was never previously imported to the US, but my friend David Giuliano, who manages the Italian portfolio for Abbona's importer, told me that he so fell in love with it after his visit to the winery, that he decided this whole non-importation situation needed to change.

I'm certainly glad that he came to this decision.

This is a special release of a very special wine from a very special vintage.

It's deep and beautifully mineral, a classic expression of Barolo that blends dark power with fragrant lift, all of which is anchored by the stony core and firm, but well-carried tannins.

Like all of Abbona's wines, there's a friendliness to it that makes it pretty dang irresistible right now (especially in these winter months), but it's only going to get better over the next decade.

I think back to that dinner, and I can still taste the dark, mineral complexity of this C-M kinda sticks with you.

Well, you'll see what I'm talking about once you buy some....
