Gevrey-Chambertin is considered the most important red wine village of the Côte d'Or with its 550 ha of vines in total. The word Gevrey comes from "Gibriacus" which means keeper of goats because of its dry and arid land where classic crops could not grow; only the breeding of goats allowed the inhabitants to live. These lands were the preferred location for vines in the first century AD. The word Chambertin, the village's most famous terroir, was added to Gevrey in 1847. The Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes cuvée is produced from vines that are over 60 years old and is deliciously compelling. Pale in colour the concentrated fruit fills your mouth with glorious perfume and intensity. There is a subtle spicy side to this, but with a lovely generosity of forest fruit.
