Bodegas D. Mateos Rioja La Mateo 2020 Spain-La Rioja-Red MCF Rare Wine - MCF Rare Wine

Surprise finds of the week!

In the spirit of having a good, easy-drinking, low price red to get us through the weekend, I asked Ben from Weygandt Selections to show us a few options. What was supposed to be a quick pick turned into... well, a newsletter!
After all, when you come across both a beautiful Rioja and an aromatic Bordeaux under $15, you have to consider if you need one or, in fact, two reds for the next few chilly days. That's the conclusion Ray and I reached after much deliberation (in the form of drinking our way through the bottles).
But enough foreplay, here are the wines and a special offer!

The Bodegas D. Mateos Rioja La Mateo 2020 is the estate's entry level red. Made with Tempranillo fruit sourced on the gentle slopes of Mount Yerga, this Rioja is all elegance and length. Medium-bodied, deep and lush, the dark-fruited palate is seasoned with baking spices and seductively inky, the tannins so fine the "grip" is more of a caress. And the finish! Such elongation has no business being found in an entry-level red, but here it is (I had to take so many sips to make sure I was not imagining it). If you love a good Rioja and/or a good bargain, you know what to do ;)

Le Chateau Laubespin Le Moulin Medoc 2018 is a left bank Bordeaux that gave us pause; somehow this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot manages to offers such an aromatic palate. Chiseled, lifted and structured, this Medoc presents with a beautiful collage of bright Cabernet fruit that's broadened out by the textural generosity of the Merlot. This is classic Bordeaux done just right...
