A Delightful Margaux

The time has come for me to, once again, highlight a Bordeaux.

Every time I do offer one, I go on about how so many of them are made in a style that doesn't speak to me, or are priced in such a way that leaves me choosing to drink something else.

But, alas, when I taste one like today's wine, I get that fuzzy, yeah-this-is-pretty-good feeling...

...and I silently admit to myself, once again, that I can, in fact like these wines in a normal, non-stuffy and purely enjoyable way.

Château des Gravieres 2019 Margaux did that for me last week...

...and all of that happened even before I knew the price on it.

Once I found out that it was less than $75, the feeling went from fuzzy nostalgia to this urgent realization that I just stumbled across a wine that all of you were going to love.

Pure, unpretentious Cabernet-based, minimal-intervention grower Margaux that's well priced, and textbook in character almost sounds like something I was dreaming about one time, only to wake up remembering all of the wide-knotted ties, shiny pinstripe suits and heavily-applied cologne that haunt this vaunted appellation.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with all of that, but all of the ultra-luxury of the economy-unto-itself that is classified Bordeaux is, well...built into the price you pay (and then some).

I like farmers who make wine to enjoy with food and people.  Christophe Landry is a fifth generation farmer making wine to enjoy with food and people.

This, the Chateau's flagship wine, is 60% Cabernet, 25% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc, 4% each Malbec/Petit Verdot and, yes, 2% Carmenère (bet you didn't see that coming).

It's dark, mineral, focused, chiseled and structured, with clarity and precision to all of the nuance that hits just right.  All of that amazing stony energy and classic, cedar-y aromatics that great Cabernet is known for really begin to emerge in the 2nd hour or so.  It just keeps getting better as you drink it.

It's so proper, yet so refreshing...

...like when you meet some super important or famous person you expect to be stuffy or maniacally egotistical, but you quickly realize they're just a regular, easy-to-talk-to dude, who just wants to hang out and have a good time.

So hang out, and have a good time with this delightful wine...

...because I will if you don't...
